Goodbye old friend

Our administrative director, Kevin Redam retired today. He was a nice guy. Somehow he managed to get some work done without pushing too many people around. We have a new guy taking over from him on Monday. Kevin's managed to get himself a ten-year living permit on the New Zealand Actively Retired Community. (That's a classy name for an old age home) Once that's up he'll probably go in for euthanasia. I'm surprised he's got enough money for that long. Yeah, he's got a daughter. She moved to the Alpha Luna colony with some mining boss boyfriend ten years ago. I suppose he hasn't heard much from her since then. Rumour has it she sneaked out on a corporate transport under an assumed name and was "missing" for over a week. And I don't think she's gonna pay for daddy's retirement.
Now where was I? Yeah, the new guy. Supposed to be some hotshot guy from the Water Corporation. Frankly I think that the administration's crazy hiring an ex-Water Corp lackey, especially after the Corp messed up the Three Gorges Dam project in China and flooded a few hundred square kilometers last year. Luckily I'm going off to Zimababwe on Tuesday, so I won't have to suck up to him till half the month's gone. Not that I'll be happy in Zimbabwe. This is the second time this year that they managed to fry their microwave comm-link with the InterPlaNet. And it's even hotter there.
As for the smartass yapping about air-conditioners: yeah the future got passed them and Faster-Than-Light doesn't work. So get over it.

Yipee! it's me again

I'm back etc. etc. So, what now? I don't know. Why haven't I been typing? Didn't feel like it I suppose. When you have a job that pays peanuts and the only upshot is free travel to places you don't want to go, you're not really in a mood to write poetry. And my nightmares? Yeah, they're okay. Live and kicking just as they've always been. It's hot again and the ECC still officially denies global warming. At least air conditioners still work on this damned planet.

I hate this planet

Damn it's been a horrible day today. The clouds have blocked the sky for the third day running and the ECC (Environmental Control Commission) refuses to do anything about it. This planet sucks. In fact I suppose it's been this way for the last few centuries. On top of the depressing weather, there's been more trouble.

A few dozen of those stupid anti-eugenics protesters decided to have a little riot across the river. They did a bit of burning before some of our guys got over and told them to quit whining. Seriously, is it our fault if their parents were too dumb to see that gene therapy was the best thing since sliced bread? Maybe if we castrated the lot of them they'd shut up.

Here's a pointer for all you twenty-first century 'pure-blood' humans: when genengineering comes along -- go for it. Now I'm going back to my nightmares.

Nightmares

Everybody has them. I have them all the time. But I wonder, which ones are the scarriest? The ones with monsters and ghouls and other unfriendly things? Or the ones in which everything is the same except for a few details ( like your dad's a murderer or your girlfriend hates you) ? You decide
Personally the scarriest ones are those in which you know you're in a nightmare, but you just can't find the light switch. You know there's a way out, but you just can't find it.
Too bad for me, there is no way out. And as for the light switch, well, the light burned out a long, long time ago

Welcome to the Future

The future. It's supposed to be bright and shiny, everyone's happy and the past is just a distant memory.
Believe me, it's not like that.
The future isn't all that it's made up to be. How do I know? Well, let's put it this way: for me, the future really is now.
Welcome to the future boys and girls. I hope that you all brought your towels along, because you're going to be needing them soon. And no, this isn't a round trip.
